Patient education can have a major benefit on patient knowledge, compliance and outcomes. The following outlines ways in which physicians can provide effective patient education:
  • Having patients write down questions/concerns prior to the visit
  • Listening to the patient
  • Explaining the medication prescribed
  • Ensuring the patient has understood the information
  • Determining if there are likely to be problems with compliance to a prescribed treatment regimen
  • Writing down the diagnosis and treatment and giving the patient written materials about the condition
  • Encouraging patients in their efforts to manage their disorder
  • Using other health professionals to help with education and referring patients to organized arthritis programs.
