Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are the most common chronic conditions affecting 20-40% of adults in developed countries. To determine whether MSK disorders are more than just aches and pains, data from the 1990 Ontario Heath Survey were analyzed. The sample size was 45,650 people aged 16 years and older. The prevalence of chronic MSK disorders was 22% of which 5% reported long-term disability as a result of MSK disorders. More than 75% reported a duration of over six months and the average duration of the MSK disorder was five years. Of the reported MSK disorders 72% had entailed consulting a health professional in the previous year. The proportion of consultations was over 50% for those with a disease duration of 10 years or more. Chronic MSK disorders were shown to be a major cause of morbidity, disability and use of the healthcare system. MSK disorders because of their long duration, impact and continued use of healthcare resources cannot be viewed as minor health problems.
