Bone Metabolism Regulators


Drug

Calcitonin (Calcimar®, Caltine®, Miacalcin® NS)

Dosage used in clinical practice

  • 50 to 100 IU sc daily
  • 200 IU intranasal spray daily

Dosage according to CPS

  • Calcimar®:
    • Starting dose: 100 IU/day sc or im
    • For many patients, doses of 50 IU/day on alternate days are sufficient
  • Caltine®:
    • 100 IU/day sc or im
    • Patients may be maintained on 50 IU/day or 50 to 100 IU 3 times/week
  • Miacalcin® NS:
    • 1 spray (200 IU)/day intranasally, alternating nostrils daily


Indications
Osteoporosis

Comments
Calcitonin may be of particular use in pain relief for patients with acute osteoporotic (vertebral) fracture.

Anaphylaxis may rarely occur with subcutaneous administration and test dosage should be administered prior to therapy (see CPS).
