Acetaminophen (TYLENOL*)

Dosage used in clinical practice

  • Variable prn or regular dosing depending on severity and duration of pain
  • Dosage should never exceed 4 g/day

Dosage according to CPS

  • 650 to 1,000 mg every 4 to 6 hours as required not to exceed 4,000 mg in 24 hours

Principle Indications

  • Regional pain syndromes
  • Diffuse pain syndromes
  • Degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)
  • Any other rheumatic disease where supplementary pain control is required

Comments

  • Caution should be exercised when prescribing TYLENOL* (acetaminophen) to patients with a history of alcohol abuse, kidney disease, or certain liver diseases


  • TYLENOL* (acetaminophen) is available in different formulations including over-the-counter (OTC) products. Particular attention must be paid to the dosing recommendations of the different products.
