The serum uric acid may be elevated in a proportion of patients suffering from gout, although it must be remembered that it is not a universal finding. Conversely, many patients have elevated levels of serum uric acid which are not associated with clinical attacks of gout. Consequently, it must be remembered that hyperuricemia and gout although associated are not synonymous.
