Measurement of C3 and C4 levels is rarely warranted as a routine investigation in otherwise uncomplicated connective tissue disease. However, low levels of complement are a reflection of complement activation and consumption and are seen mainly in those conditions associated with immune complex circulation and/or tissue deposition.
