These non-specific symptoms in an elderly subject need to be taken seriously and lead to a number of possible differential diagnoses including inflammatory polyarthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, polymyositis, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism and carcinomatous neuromyopathy. Any other systemic symptoms such as weight loss, anorexia, severe pain or joint swelling should be regarded as red flags.
