All
of the differential diagnoses may present with
similar clinical findings.
Hydrochlorothiazide can increase
uric acid levels and thus aggravate gout. Consequently
it may be necessary to change the patient’s
hypertensive medication.
The physician should also look
for evidence of trauma, septic skin lesions, abrasions
and throat or urinary infections.
Red flags include:
• Raised temperature
• Rigors
• Polymorphonuclear leucocytosis
