Jean is a 28-year-old female:

  • On maternity leave
  • Mother of two boys, one aged two years and the other six months
  • Has complained of low back pain in the past, but usually responded to over-the-counter (OTC) medications (ibuprofen [MOTRIN*] or acetaminophen [TYLENOL*(acetaminophen)])
  • At previous visits, Jean said she thought the pain was a result of her lifting her children more often
  • The increased pain in the third trimester of her current pregnancy was ascribed to postural changes and weight gain
  • One previous episode of knee swelling which she self treated for three weeks. No diagnosis was made of the event.

Other history:

  • An episode of "eye inflammation" 10 years ago
  • Father has a history of back pain that has lasted for many years and he now has a "stiff back."
